Description
Here’s a scarce piece of Oz-related ephemera–an early comic golf postcard drawn by Wizard of Oz book illustrator John R Neill. The postcard is related to a series of skinny men Neill drew for the Sunday Magazines (a newspaper supplement) called “Life Among the Macaronis”. Labelled “Boston Sunday Post Souvenir Postal Card”, “copyright 1904 by Associated Sunday Magazines”. While the card isn’t signed by Neill, the art is clearly the same as that in another feature credited to Neill called “Fine Points in Golf”. See the last photo for that piece (not included).
This card is entitled “A Disaster on the Links”, showing a dejected golfer after a day at the course. I have another of these cards in my own collection–the other, presumably the first in the series, is called “Off for the Links” and shows a golfer giddy with anticipation. These are rare cards and I’ve searched far and wide for another one to share with you! Enjoy. Unused, in very good condition with some age toning.
