Description
Here is another adorable book by Oz illustrator W. W. Denslow: Denslow’s Simple Simon. I’ve been lucky to obtain two Simons recently, the first of this title in the series I’ve been able to offer. This is the true 1st edition published by Dillingham in 1904, and is especially nice in that it’s mounted on linen. According to well-known Baum and Denslow bibliographer Bill Thompson in the Spring 2015 Baum Bugle: “It is especially difficult to find good copies of these [linen], when compared with the plain paper versions. The proportion of sales, plain paper compared to linen-mounted, is unknown, but twenty years of scouring shops and online sites for copies gives me a rough estimate of what has survived: I find about ten plain paper copies to every linen-mounted copy, regardless of condition, and of these, the plain paper copies are about three times more likely to be “complete” (meaning all pages present).” This linen copy is complete and in decent condition overall.
Fully illustrated with color and Denslow’s trademark seahorse signature on nearly every page, as well as illustrated endpapers. Cover and spine have moderate soiling and wear. Interior is very good overall, with no writing and relatively clean pages for one of these fragile little books that are often loved to death. Recent reprints abound, be sure to get the original!
