Description
Here is a wonderful early Oz-related advertising piece. In 1932, The Wonderland of Oz comic strip was created as a newspaper serialization of 5 of L Frank Baum’s books. This large poster/flyer features “Here They Come–Your Old Friends…The Wonderland of Oz” on the cover with a wonderful Oz character montage by Walt Spouse, who also illustrated the strip. Inside on the first page, there is fan mail to Ruth Plumly Thompson on the top and the Wonderland of Oz No 1 and No 2 strips below. On the opposing page are Nos 11, 12 and 60 (which includes an offer for a color map of the Land of Oz), while below those is an offer and order blank from the distributors, C C Cunningham (Detroit). The piece is large, and printed on 2 separate leaves of thick paper, which were then folded to about 11.5″ x16″.
This scarce item is from the estate of Oz expert David Greene and is shown on page 72 in The Oz Scrapbook, the book he co-wrote with Dick Martin. I believe it to be original, as the paper looks old, but am not 100% sure as I’ve never seen it before. All my items are returnable if they are not as you expect. The piece is in good overall condition but had been rolled tightly, and still has considerable curl. I will store and ship it flat to try to counteract this. Also with some age toning and light staining.
