Description
Here is a rare set of 4 children’s booklets by Wizard of Oz author Ruth Plumly Thompson, packaged together in a publisher’s box as “The Chuckle Books”. Thompson originally wrote these storied for the Philadelphia Public Ledger, next they were published by Murray Publications, and then by Donohue as these are here in the 1930s. Thompson is credited at bottom of inside cover. Each book contains two stories with titles for each story on one cover (front or back) and 12 pages (including covers) of gorgeous illustrations by Charles Coll. For more on this series, see Holly’s blog: http://ilex-wannabewonderlandsoutsideofoz.blogspot.com/2011/08/topsy-turvy-land.html?q=chuckle+books
Booklets include Lucky Peter & Old Doc Turtle, Tommy Frog Goes Fishing & Tommy Frog And The Pirate, The Land of Nod and Rocking Horse Hill, and my favorites, Piggy Goes To College & Piggy At The Fair. All in very good condition except for owner’s name on cover and age toning to Rocking Horse Hill’s cover. The box has light wear and is also signed inside by same owner. First time I have seen this set.
