Description
Here is an unusual and fabulous item by Oz illustrator W. W. Denslow: his last magazine cover for Life, from July 1915. Not only was this his last cover, but his first substantial contract in a long time–so happy he was about this, that he went on a drinking binge and died a few days later from complications related to pneumonia! The cover is a parody of the Egyptian Revival style of the time and is titled “How Perfectly Absurd!” It is signed with both Den’s name and seahorse in the lower left corner. It also contains a beautiful “Sea of Matrimony” color centerfold–but I cannot read the artist’s name.
Magazine is 9″ by 11″, and is in very good condition, though it does have a discrete “Keene, N.H. Public Library” embossed stamp and date on front cover. Complete with light spine wear but no writing or tears.
