Here is a fabulous copy of Peter and the Princess written by Carl H Grabo, with illustrations by famed Wizard of Oz illustrator John R. Neill, published by Reilly & Lee in 1920. Author is Carl Grabo. This book hard to find in nice condition at all. This book has all 8 COLOR PLATES as well as all the captioned TISSUE GUARDS over the plates. (Note: The list of illustrations has 9 entries, but the illustrated swan endpapers are considered one of the illustrations). I believe this is a first or very early printing, as some other copies I’ve seen were issued without the tissue guards. The book is a generous 7″ by 9 1/2″ format, 243 pages. The front cover has a full color pastedown embellished with gilt lettering and border.
Inside, Neill has created wonderful blue illustrated endpapers featuring swans. Next, comes the full-color frontispiece and the color-illustrated title page. Finally, the text is complemented with additional color plates by Neill, all covered with tissue guards where the caption is actually emblazoned ON the tissue guard itself. The plates must be seen to fully appreciate. Really, truly, a fabulous book.
This book is in very good minus condition. The cover plate has light wear, and the gilt border has some gaps and spotting at the top. The spine ends and corners have moderate wear. Inside, the hinges are intact and there is a prior owner’s name on the blank endpaper, which also has a 2/3″ closed tear at the base. The eight color plates are in excellent shape, with the original tissue guards, although one is loose and laid in. The text itself is complete but does have some soiling here and there, and a few pages near the end have fold marks. Overall a nice copy overall of an unusual early Neill title.
