Description
Here is a wonderful 1st edition book designed and illustrated by Wizard of Oz illustrator W.W. Denslow: The Pearl and the Pumpkin. This 1904 full-length book by Denslow has 16 beautiful full-color illustrations, in the style of the original Wonderful Wizard, with single color illustrations signed by Denslow on nearly every text page as well. Gorgeous and finely printed, but according to Greene and Hearn, with “a crowded but inconsequential plot”. Text by Paul West. In the hard to find 1st edition published by Dilliingham, which was issued with two styles of decorated endpapers; this copy in orange and black instead of light blue. Denslow’s seahorses are everywhere in this book and much more elaborate than usual.
In very good overall condition. Front cover cloth has light soiling, pastedown is nice, spine and rear cover are quite clean. Inside, both hinges are intact, with an inscription and pencil bookseller’s notation on front endpaper. Pages are bright and in very good condition with just the occasional minor stain. The 16 full color illustrations (printed on uncoated stock, same as book) are all present and in near fine condition. Overall a lovely book and a superior copy.
