Description
Here is a rare version of the “Who When What Book” with a classic W W Denslow cover–a buxom woman (Athena?), a set of wings, a wreath, an hourglass and of course, his seahorse signature! This one unusual in that instead of the usual Chicago newspaper advertised on the front, it advertises the Indianapolis Press. This 2nd edition has 100 additional photos of famous “Indianians”. It’s bound in red instead of the blue-green of the Chicago version. The rear cover has another classic Denslow touch–a galleon. The book is published by–who else?–The “Who-When-What Company” (Chicago) and copyright W M Knox. Both copyright and publication date are 1900. The book contains bios of famous people with tipped-in photos of each that the owner would cut and paste from the newspaper. Larger than Den’s usual cloth covers–about 8″x11″.
A nice copy, with the graphics in good condition, with some rubbing of gilt and cloth at top of spine and rear cover. Still very attractive. Interior pages in very good condition, although the owner of this book didn’t bother to paste in most of the photos, so most are blank. A few small clippings laid in at the back. The last photo shows the other Chicago version I’m also listing.
