Description
Here’s one for you if you like interesting segues into history from the world of Oz. Fred Hamlin, who produced The Wizard of Oz 1902 stageplay, was the son of John A Hamlin, a magician/showman who sold the patent medicine “Hamlin’s Wizard Oil”. Profits from the “medicine”, which contained alcohol, herbs and turpentine, were used to fund Chicago’s Grand Opera House (where the Oz musical was first shown). L. Frank Baum worked with Fred Hamlin on the script, although the men didn’t always see eye to eye. This is a large card, 4-7/8″ x 6 1/2″, showing a man fresh off his carriage bringing a bottle of Wizard Oil to a woman and her daughter. The Calvert Litho. Co, Detroit. This was produced in the Victorian era, circa 1880s.
In very good condition on front with corner crease and some discoloration on back. With center punch, as issued. A rare example, well over 100 years old now.
