Description

Here is an interesting vintage postcard for the Dudley Street Elevated Terminal in Boston, with a “What did the Woggle-Bug say?” billboard in the far background! The WoggleBug craze swept the country in response to an advertising campaign associated with the publication of The Marvelous Land of Oz in 1904. Newspapers ran a comic called “Queer Visitors From The Marvelous Land of Oz”, where the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, the Woggle-Bug, the Sawhorse, Jack Pumpkinhead, and the Gump visit the United States of America. The stories ended with the question “What did the Woggle-Bug say?”, and comic Wogglebug pinbacks were produced. In addition, L Frank Baum wrote a 1905 Woggle-bug book and a stageplay called The Woggle-bug that premiered in Milwaukee, WI and aired for a short time in Chicago in 1905.

A fun obscure Oz-related item, unused and in excellent condition.
