Description
Here is a nice copy of The Sea Fairies, the Copp Clark (Canadian) first edition, first printing. Copp-Clark published many of the Oz books simultaneously with the first editions of Reilly & Britton, in much fewer numbers than the American editions. See the “Oz in Canada” reference book for more information, whereauthor C. J. Hinke says, “Collectors of Oz books have long recognized that Copp Clark copies are very scarce”. The Sea Fairies is one of the most collectible of Baum’s books, even when published by Reilly & Britton. Even more desirable is this Copp Clark first, with both a Copp Clark imprint on both the spine and the title page. Copyright 1911, with 12 gorgeous iridescent color plates by John R. Neill, like the Reilly and Britton first printing.
Book is in very good condition overall. Color cover pastedown has light rubbing, spine writing is slightly faded, and rear cover has whitish scuffing as shown. Inside, the illustrated endpapers are complete and the hinges are intact. Book Belong To page has a bookseller’s pencil notation at the top. The 12 color plates are all attached and in very good condition. Pages are generally clean, with occasional soiling and toning. A nice copy overall, particularly for this hard to find edition.
