Description
Here is an unusual copy of Pirates in Oz, the Copp Clark (Canadian) first edition. Oz experts know that Copp-Clark published many of the Oz books simultaneously with the first editions of Reilly & Britton and Reilly & Lee, and that fewer were published than the American editions. (Exceptions are the 1940s-reprinted Ozma, Road, Dorothy, and Land). See the “Oz in Canada” reference book for more information, where C. J. Hinke says, “Collectors of Oz books have long recognized that Copp Clark Copies are very scarce”. This book is a first edition, first printing, with the Copp Clark imprint on both the spine and the title page. Copyright 1931, written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, and also contains 12 amazingly colorful plates by John R. Neill.
The book is in good to very good condition overall. There is light wear to color cover pastedown, spine cloth a little dirty, and some loss to the edge of the rear board (see last photo). Inside, the hinges are tight, and there is some blackish staining to endpapers, title page and frontis (looks to be charcoal, possibly from an early pencil?). The 12 color plates are all present and in beautiful condition. The text is in nice condition with age toning and light wear. The Book Belongs To page is blank.
