Description
Here is an early copy of The Patchwork Girl of Oz book with an interesting brown-cloth cover. Written by L. Frank Baum, published by Reilly & Lee, copyright 1913. This printing is circa 1919/1920 with advertisements to Magic of Oz on back of half title page). Beautiful color illustrated endpapers, and many fabulous color illustrations by John R Neill throughout the text. What makes this copy especially interesting is the brown cloth; usually this printing has tan cloth as given in The Book Collector’s Guide to Baum. Oz bibliographer and collector extraordinaire says he’s never seen one with brown cloth, but “R&L does seem to have a pattern of throwing odd colored cloth in here and there.”
This book is fair to good condition only. The cloth cover has a vertical stripe on the front with wear to edges, corners and spine ends as shown. Inside, both hinges are badly cracked, with the mull (webbing) showing and so the cover is loose, but holding. There is a neat name on the Book Belongs To page. Leaf 223/224 is loose and tattered and laid in. The rest of the pages are in quite good condition, and with beautiful color Neill illustrations. Offered at a discount for the budget collector.
