Description
Here is a true 1st edition of The Giant Horse of Oz by Ruth Plumly Thompson with 12 color plates, in the original first edition dust jacket, albeit with some issues for the jacket. Published by Reilly & Lee, this is the 1928 first printing with the misprint “Oniberon” for “Quiberon” on the frontispiece (referencing The Book Collector’s Guide to Baum). The dust jacket lists to Giant Horse on the flap, as called for in the first jacket. Also with decorated Oz end papers.
Condition of the book is near very good, with a little cracking to the pastedown near the base, some spotting to the spine and clean rear cover. Inside, the front hinge is intact but the rear one is cracked with mull showing (I think this could be re-glued fairly easily as the paper is still there, but will leave that to you). Both endpapers have some age toning, and the ownership page is blank but does have a 1″ tear at the base. Pages are in generally nice shape with light soiling, and all 12 color plates are present and in good condition except for one which is badly torn along the gutter and just barely hanging on at the top. The dust jacket is poor, with most of the spine missing and a little of the back missing so it’s split into two pieces, now held together with an archival cover. Also some creasing, wear and tear on edges, especially to back of rear cover. For the budget minded collector or at-home restorer, get the as-is 1st jacket basically for free!
