Description

Here is a nice early copy of The Emerald City of Oz, sixth of the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. Copyright 1910 by Reilly & Britton, this is an early Reilly & Lee printing (1920) with advertisement of other titles in the front listing to Glinda of Oz. Reilly & Lee on spine and title page, and also with 12 fabulous color plates by John R. Neill (in addition to many black and white illustrations). While the Book Collector’s Guide to Baum says that this printing should have captioned color plates, this copy still has uncaptioned plates in the positions of the 1919 printing. Cover design shown the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman as fenceposts in front of the Emerald City. Also contains beautiful illustrated endpapers of Ozma and Dorothy.

This book exterior is very good, with just light scratching to pastedown, two small gouges to top of front board, clean rear cover and spine. The interior is also very good, with tight hinges and clean endpapers save a bookseller’s pencil price and notation. Title page and one other page have a crease. All 12 color plates are present and in very good condition, except one (with the spoons) is detached with small edge tears. Overall an attractive early copy.
