Description
Here is an interesting variant of “Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz”, fourth of the Oz books written by L Frank Baum. Copyright 1908 by Reilly & Lee, this is ca. 1929 edition with color plates, and with the matching original dust jacket listing to Jack Pumpkinhead of Oz on the flap. This early dust jacket has Dorothy and the Wizard on the yellow cover, and plain black spine printing with an unusual capitalized REILLY & LEE. The book itself is consistent with the 1929 jacket, as there are no advertisements in the front which corresponds to the 1927-1930 time frame according to The Book Collector’s Guide to Baum. Oddly, there are 11 color plates apparently as issued, which the Book Collector’s Guide lists as occurring in 1931–but now we know, even earlier. The text is also shortened to 238 pages, as given ca. 1930.
Condition of the book itself is very good plus–clean exterior with light wear at spine ends, tight binding, intact hinges, age toning to endpapers, Book Belongs To page blank, color plates clean. There is a also a bookseller’s notation in pencil on the rear endpaper.
The dust jacket is fair only, with large chips, edgewear, and pieces of the spine detached but held together with the in archival cover. Also pencil markings on the front flap.
