Description

Here is a 1st edition, 1st printing of “Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz”, fourth of the Oz books written by L Frank Baum, published in 1908 by Reilly & Britton, from the collection of beloved Oz Club member Fred Meyer. The ads in the front list only The Land of Oz, Ozma of Oz and John Dough, making it a 1st printing according to the Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum, in Binding B. With 16 incredible color plates by John R Neill (and black captions as called for in 1st printing)!

Book is complete, but has some significant flaws. Gold cover pastedown has some scuffing and scratching. The spine and rear cover are in good overall condition. Inside, the front hinge is cracked and the front endpaper is loosening with some wear to fore-edge and a long tear neatly glue repaired. The text block is badly cracked (but holding loosely) at the Book Belongs To page, which has a stamped name, as does the half-title page with a 1910 inscription. The ad page has some pencil notations, likely by Fred himself. All 16 full-color plates are present and in generally nice condition, though the frontis is missing a corner and a few are loosening a little. Not a perfect copy by any means, but still a hard to find 1st to fill that hole in your collection. Will come with a statement of provenance that it’s from Fred’s collection.
