Description
Interesting book by L. Frank Baum about John Dough, a very unusual gingerbread man. This is the 1906 first edition, first printing with misprint “cage” on p. 275, before it was corrected to “cave”. In binding A (REILLY & BRITTON CO on spine). with the stub for the detachable contest blank present in the book.
The topic of the contest was “Is the Cherub a boy or a girl?” Good question. The book has many weird and wonderful drawings in vivid color by John R. Neill. Rear endpapers advertise The Twinkle Tales and The Christmas Stocking Series (with the little books packaged in a miniature bookcase), The Land of Oz and the elusive Wogglebug Book.
This book is in good condition, with the main flaw being that both hinges were repaired with what appears to be archival document repair tape–see photos. The cover graphics are beautiful, though there is splitting starting to cloth at fore-edge and some wear to base and back of spine. The illustrated rear cover is nice. Aside from the hinge repair, the interior is in quite good shape–with just one page with a small tear noted. There is also a Christmas 1906 gift inscription.
