Here is a wonderful 1st edition book designed and illustrated by Wizard of Oz illustrator W.W. Denslow: The Pearl and the Pumpkin. This 1904 full-length book by Denslow has 16 beautiful full-color illustrations, in the style of the original Wonderful Wizard book, with single color illustrations signed by Denslow on nearly every text page as well. Gorgeous and finely printed, but according to Greene and Hearn, with “a crowded but inconsequential plot”. Text by Paul West. In the hard to find 1st edition published by Dilliingham, which was issued with two styles of decorated endpapers; this copy in light blue. Seahorses are everywhere in this book and much more elaborate than usual.
In good plus overall condition, with the main issue being a slant to the text block and some fading to spine lettering. Corners are bumped and a little wear at base of spine. Inside, both hinges are intact, with old pencil bookseller’s notation and price on front endpaper. Pages and complete but do have some staining. The 16 full color illustrations (printed on uncoated stock, same as book) are all present and in very nice condition. Overall a still-lovely book and brimming with character.
