Description
Here is a copy of Peter and the Princess written by Carl H Grabo, with illustrations by famed Wizard of Oz illustrator John R. Neill. The author is Carl Grabo; the book was published by Reilly & Lee in 1920. Inside, Neill has created wonderful blue illustrated endpapers featuring swans. Next, comes the full-color frontispiece and the color-illustrated title page. Finally, the text is complemented with additional color plates by Neill. The plates must be seen to fully appreciate. This book has all 8 color plates by Neill. (Note: The list of illustrations has 9 entries, with two related to the story in Chapter 9, but instead of using both illustrations as plates within that chapter, the one with the swans is used for the illustrated endpapers). The book is a generous 7″ by 9 1/2″ format, 243 pages. The front cover has a full color pastedown embellished with gilt lettering and border. I believe this is also the first printing as it has captioned tissue guards over the plates, whereas some early copies do not.
The book is in good only condition, with some loss to the cover pastedown and light wear to spine ends. . The cover gilt has light wear, the corners are a little worn and the rear cover has some light stains. Inside, the hinges are intact and the swan endpapers are nice, with a name on the half-title page, and heavy finger soiling to the text pages. The color plates are in nice shape overall. The book still presents nicely.
