Description
Here is an interesting item for the Oz collector–Boys’ and Girls’ Big Picture and Story Book, published by Donohue (undated, ca. 1915). What makes this book so interesting is that is uses the cover illustration from the first printing of Baum’s Enchanted Island of Yew book. The colors are different, but the illustration is clearly the same. This unusual book is profiled as an “Oz Oddity” feature in the Spring 1998 Baum Bugle magazine.
Book has about 300 pages and is copiously illustrated in black and white (illustrators uncredited), with a color frontispiece. A wierd collection of fairy tales and action tales such as “Attacked by Panthers, Wolves and Indians” and “Capturing a Baby Orang” as well as “Three Little Pigs” and “Wee Willie Winkie”. Note there is also a later printing than that described in the Bugle with a B&W frontispiece and unnumbered pages as opposed to the hybrid numbering described there.
The book is in unusually good condition, with a clean and bright cover, light edge wear, intact endpapers, and nice, clean pages throughout.
