Sorry, this book is now sold. The first time that I’ve been able to find one of these books with this scarce dust jacket! This is the rare British motion picture edition of the Wizard of Oz, published in London by Hutchinson & Co. and timed with the MGM movie release in Great Britain, circa 1940. This is the plain cloth Binding B (according to the Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum), with the beautiful full color dust jacket. The wrap around image features Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, and Bert Lahr on the front and spine of the book & jacket, but this blue/green jacket is much different from the orangish-yellow jacket that is also rare, but more often seen. According to the Book Collector’s Guide, no publication priority has been established. (Shown as Fig 23 in that book.) The book contains eight beautiful inserted color stills and publicity photos from the movie, unlike the more common American movie edition which contains the traditional Denslow color plates.
The book is in good condition, with a slight bow to the cover, a 1941 gift inscription, and a bookseller’s pencil notation on front endpaper. There is substantial foxing on the endpapers and opposite the color plates, which is common with this wartime edition. The plates themselves are all attached and in very good condition. The binding is cracked in a few places, but is intact and holding. The book has a faint musty odor.
The dust jacket is also in good condition, with some chipping at top of spine, wear along flap folds, price clipped, and some scuffing on back. Still with bright colors and quite attractive overall. Please see the many photos. One of my scarcest books!
