Description

Here is a nice early copy of The Patchwork Girl of Oz, written by L. Frank Baum, published by Reilly & Lee, copyright 1913. This has the color pastedown cover, and is an unusual transitional printing with only a few of the inner illustrations in color throughout. The Book Collector’s Guide to Baum notes at least one “escaped” copy having been seen with color deleted from some pages but not others. In particular, since the Chapter Numbers were also in color, this leaves the book with the peculiar result that many chapter numbers are now missing, with numbers remaining only for Chapters 6, 14, 15, 15, 17, 18, 24, 25, 26, 27, and 28, which have the leading pages in color. Some of these same chapters also retain one or two full pages in color. Also weirdly, the front endpapers are in B&W while the rear ones are still in color, so they must have run out of the color front endpapers first.

The book front pastedown is still nice, while the spine has some darkening and a some wear to cloth at back side. Rear cover and interior are very good, with tight hinges, clean pages and no writing except for a 1937 date on the ownership page.
