Here is a nice early copy of “The Land of Oz”, 2nd of the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. Copyright 1904, this is probably an early 1930s printing published by Reilly & Lee, but still with color plates by John R Neill. What makes this book unusual is that this book has only 11 color plates, and the positions are completely different from any of the 4 plate placements noted in The Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum. Most of the plates are shifted back from the “regular” placements, and the last one is not there at all. The Guide says that “Still later copies may have been issued with fewer than 12 color plates”, so I postulate that this is one of these unusual copies. The book is bound in beautiful deep pink cloth, and black and white pictorial endpapers.
The exterior has some rubbing to the pastedown, and some soiling/staining to cloth on rear cover. Spine has a little darkening but still looks nice. Inside, hinges are unbroken, and the endpapers are clean with just a bookseller’s pencil price at the top. The pages are very clean throughout, no writing or tears. The color plates are in very good condition, except one has a piece of 2″ tape covering a small tear. A book for the completist collector.
