Description
Here is a first edition, fourth printing of the Marvelous Land of Oz, copyright 1904, ca. 1914 according to the Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum. While the title on the cover has been shortened to “The Land of Oz”, the book is still published by Reilly & Britton, and has 16 amazing color plates by John R Neill. In Binding E with green Montgomery and Stone being pulled by the Sawhorse endpapers.
The condition of the book is very good overall. The cover cloth is bright and the silver embellishments still strong on cover and spine. There is a small area on base of the spine edge that looks to have been reglued–see photo. Inside, the hinges are tight and the endpapers are still beautiful and clean. The pages are very good with light finger soiling, and I saw one 1/2″ edge tear. Best of all, all 16 color plates are present and in near fine condition! There is a little fraying of cloth to top rear corner, and some pencil markings on base of text block (see photo). But all in all a really lovely survivor of this early Wizard of Oz book by Baum, in much better than usual condition.
