Description
Here is an early copy of The Scalawagons of Oz book, copyright 1941 by John R. Neill, but ca late 1940s to late 1950s according to the Book Collector’s Guide to Baum. Neill is best known for his illustrations, but also continued writing the Oz series briefly. Published by Reilly & Lee, this printing has no hyphen in Scalawagons on the spine, and 32 page gatherings. It still retains the pastedown on the cover and the illustrated endpapers, so is an early but not first printing. With a later (ca. 1949) dust jacket listing titles to The Shaggy Man or Oz. This Oz title was only published with black and white illustrations, and with black and white illustrated endpapers.
A beautiful copy in very good or better condition. The exterior is near fine, with a clean pastedown, spine and rear cover. The book is straight and the hinges are tight. Pages are clean, the only real flaw is an erased inscription on the Book Belongs To page that has scuffed the paper (see last photo). The dust jacket is near very good, a little chipping at front top above the “G”, some wear to joints and spine ends, not price clipped, nice flaps. Overall a very collectible early copy.
