Here’s a rare L. Frank Baum book: one of the Oz-man Tales–The Yellow Hen. First published as a series of 4 “Snuggle-Tales” books by Reilly & Britton in 1916, these were re-issued with additional color plates as the “Oz-man Tales” by Reilly & Lee. This book has a color frontispiece and 3 other full-page color illustrations by John R Neill.
These early paper-covered books are fragile and hard to find in nice condition; this one is not perfect, but better than the other copy I currently have listed. The cover looks nice, but the spine, as usual, has lost some of the paper, especially up at the top. Inside, there are several old inscriptions, a bookseller’s old price and notation, and a paper remnant stuck on the front endpapers. Paper over front hinge partly torn and spine cracked between some pages further one, but all pages are still attached to cover. The four plates are present and in nice condition, although the frontispiece has a 1 1/2″ tear at gutter. Pages are clean and nice except for browning opposite color plates, also common with this series.
