Here is “The Scarecrow of Oz”, 9th of the Oz books written by L Frank Baum. First published in 1915 by Reilly & Britton, this is a vintage Reilly & Lee edition with the color pastedown and black and white illustrations throughout by John R Neill. The dust jacket is present and lists titles to Hidden Valley of Oz, dating the book to about 1951.
What’s nice about this book is that it contains a hand-written index that some OCD person has created on a sheet of paper laid into the front of the book. It includes characters and things mentioned throughout and their page numbers–possibly as preparation for the Who’s Who in Oz book or the more inclusive index Who’s Who, What’s What and Where’s Where in Oz by Peter Clarke?
This book is in good plus condition, with some foxing at top of pastedown, clean cloth, a solid binding, with age toning to pages, especially the endpapers. No tears but there is a former owner’s stamp on ownership page, and a black star stamp and pencil “500” on rear endpaper. The dust jacket has fading to the red title ink and is price clipped, but otherwise in very nice condition. See also my “Lucky Bucky in Oz” with index from the same collection being listed.
