Here is a nice early copy of The Emerald City of Oz, sixth of the Oz books written by L. Frank Baum. Copyright 1910 by Reilly & Britton, this is the earliest Reilly & Lee printing (1919) with advertisement of other titles in the front listing to The Tin Woodman of Oz. Reilly & Lee on spine and title page, and also with 12 fabulous color plates by John R. Neill (in addition to many black and white illustrations). This is an unusual cover design, with the Scarecrow and Tin Woodman as fenceposts in front of the Emeral City. (Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum, p. 49). Also contains beautiful illustrated endpapers of Ozma and Dorothy.
This book exterior is very good, with just a little scuffing to corner of pastedown, clean rear cover, and a little spotty color loss to spine. The interior has tight hinges and clean endpapers save a bookseller’s pencil notation. And, I just noticed a faint watermark on the lower corner of the color plates, extending only about 1/4″ in and not affecting the art or text pages at all. All 12 color plates are present and otherwise in nice condition. Overall an attractive early copy.
