Here is a 1st edition, 2nd printing of “Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz”, fourth of the Oz books written by L Frank Baum. First published in 1908 by Reilly & Britton, this is a ca. 1911 2nd printing, with ads in the front listing 6 titles (reference: The Book Collector’s Guide to L Frank Baum). This is one of my “Wild and Homeless” books, with condition issues as described below. With incredible color plates by John R Neill.
Book cover has scratches, corner cloth worn through. Spine actually looks quite nice so the book will look fine on the shelf. Inside, there are only 14 of the original 16 color plates. Some of them are discolored or rough on the edges, a few are loose and two have tape residue at inner edge. Illustrated endpapers are OK, but there is white tape at the gutter of the ownership page. The rest of the pages are in decent condition, with moderate wear. A venerable old copy, looking for a non-judgmental home and offered at a steep discount.
“Second hand books are wild books, homeless books; they have come together in vast flocks of variegated feather, and have a charm which the domesticated volumes of the library lack.” Virginia Woolf
