A rare edition of The Night Before Christmas, with an introduction by L. Frank Baum (Wizard of Oz author) describing how the Christmas stocking came to be. One of the Christmas Stocking series books designed to put inside children’s stockings. Copyright 1905 by Reilly & Britton, this is the first printing with the title page marked 1905, and in the deep red cloth cover.
This tiny book is only about 3″ by 4″ and contains 102 numbered pages. Many color illustrations and some b/w ones.
In fair to good condition only, with a vertical crease on front cover, and worn corners. Spine and rear cover are decent. Inside, the front endpaper is white instead of green (like the rear), so may have been replaced. Also, the rear hinge is badly cracked (see photo), and there are a couple other cracks between gatherings. Name and 1908 gift inscription in front. Pages complete but with some wear. A scarce little book in any condition.
