Here is a first edition of “Pirates in Oz”, one of the harder to find and thus more desirable vintage Wizard of Oz books–written by Ruth Plumly Thompson, successor to L. Frank Baum. Copyright 1931 by Reilly & Lee, this is a first printing with 12 beautiful color plates by John R. Neill. As described in Bibliographia Oziana, this has the primary binding format with “Reilly & Lee” on the spine in bold face writing. One of the more difficult Oz 1sts to find, since it only had color plates for a few years.
Book is in very good condition. Cover pastedown is very nice with light scuffing on edge, spine and rear cover are in nice condition. Inside, hinges are intact, front endpaper has old bookseller’s price in pencil, Book Belongs to Page has two lines of pencil erasures along top border. The 12 color plates are present and in fantastic condition. The text is complete and pages are generally very good, but a few with a little edge creasing and finger soiling. A nice copy of a hard-to-find Thompson first!
