Here is a wonderful 3/4 levant leather Roycroft limited edition version of “Dreams” by Olive Schreiner. designed and printed by the Roycrofters in East Aurora, New York in 1901. This is one of a signed edition of only 100 on “Imperial Japan vellum”, with title page and ornaments designed by “Saint Gerome” (Jerome Conner). According to “On a High Shelf”, one of only two books designed by Conner, and one of the most intricate Roycrofter title pages. This is V3 in Ogle’s reference, of which he says “The copies printed on Japan Vellum are among hte most attractive of all Roycroft books.” The book in fine morocco leather binding is larger than most Roycroft books, about 8×10″, with unusual green marbled paper cover and endpapers. The raised spine has a beautiful gilt design with silver-centered flowers. Stamped ROYCROFT in gilt on inside turndown. Unusual in that it was written by a woman whom Wikipedia describes as a “South African author, anti-war campaigner and intellectual.”
Book is in near fine condition. Leather in nice clean condition, with just a little rubbing to corners and raised bands as shown in the photo. Binding and hinges are solid. Endpapers are clean with light age toning around the margins as is typical. The pages are very clean, with just bookseller’s pencil notations and price on the front endpaper. Original silk bookmark present and attached. A lovely example of early Roycroft binding.
