Here’s a beautiful Roycroft book with hand illumined (painted) initials designed by Oz Illustrator W W Denslow. House of Life was published by the Roycrofters in 1899, #855 of an edition of 925, “Signed” by Elbert Hubbard on the limitation page. Hand illumined title page, initials and colophon in watercolor and gilt by Anna McMillan. More heavily illumined than most of the Roycroft books, with color initials on every one of the 101 individual sonnets. These are the same Denslow initials ornamented with diamonds as in the Rubaiyat, except they are larger (See Spring 2015 Baum Bugle for more info). The book is also printed on paper watermarked with the Roycroft seahorse mark (see photo).
Condition is good, with some age toning and wear to the 3/4 suede cover, particularly on the back corner (see photo). Inside, the binding is tight, two pages with some staining as shown; other pages clean save for a 1900 gift inscription on the blank white endpaper. Silk bookmark present but detached. A nice example of Denslow’s Roycroft design.
