Description
Here is an amazing 1898 limited edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published by the Roycroft Shop/Roycrofters. This #261 of an edition of just 670, with Elbert Hubbard’s signature, and two elaborate hand-painted watercolor initials, as well as smaller hand illumined initials throughout. The book has a suede cover with embossed moth design in the title block, #OB-029-98V1I in “On a High Shelf” where author Ogle states “This is the most attractive of the 1898 editions”. This book is also special in that many of the initials and ornaments throughout are by Wizard of Oz illustrator W W Denslow, who worked with the Roycrofters during this period. 67 numbered pages; colophon dated 2 Nov 1898. There is also a small card laid in that says “We wish you, and those dear to you, a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May the New Year bring you good luck and good cheer”.
The book is in very good or better condition, with suede in great condition with very light wear to front cover, spine in good shape, small stain on rear cover. Inside, silk endpapers are intact, some age toning and offsetting of illuminations to opposite pages. Hinges and silk ribbon bookmark intact. A scarce Roycroft edition, unusual also in such nice condition.
