Wonderful cartoon depicting yellow journalist William Randolph Hearst as “The Wizard of Ooze” Scarecrow on the inside cover of Harper’s Weekly. This is the first of a series of 5 cartoons published by Harper’s, all from in 1906. This was 6 years after the Wonderful Wizard of Oz book was published, and 4 years after the successful Wizard of Oz stageplay opened. Hearst was running for political office and not very popular in some circles. All cartoons are by W. A. Rogers. Oversized magazine.
Generic Harper’s cover has wear and has separated from binding, but the Scarecrow inner cover and rest of the magazine are in quite good condition. Bookseller’s pencil date notations at top of front and back. Search for “Ooze” in my store to find the later, companion cartoons, if still available.
