Here is an interesting early book with cover design by W.W. Denslow of Wizard of Oz fame: Along the Bosphorus by Susan E Wallace, published by Rand McNally in 1898. Denslow designed a number of elaborate book covers for Rand McNally during the 1896-1899 period. For more information see “W. W. Denslow” by Greene and Hearn, the Oz Enthusiast blog at http://theozenthusiast.blogspot.com/2008/05/denslow-covers.html, or the Spring 2015 Baum Bugle. This is the 2nd state binding with the gilt lettering replaced by white, and no illustration on the rear cover. 383 pages, with tissue-guarded plate illustrations throughout (those not by Denslow). There is a stunning one of “The Sultan’s Arabs”.
The book is in just good condition, with some loss to spine ends and corners, with some fading to spine lettering. The cover illustration is still in nice shape. Front hinge cracked, rear endpaper with pencil marking, pages and internal plates very good. An uncommon Denslow cover example.
