Here is a rare original Teddy Bear Bread advertising stickpin, featuring a Steiff-like Teddy Bear. W W Denslow, illustrator of the original Wonderful Wizard of Oz book, drew a series of advertisting postcards for Teddy Bear Bread, and a 1992 Postcard Collector magazine says, “The scarcity of these cards was created by the fact that a Teddy Bear stick pin was given away as a premium upon turning in a set of cards”. According to the Autumn 1972 Denslow checklist (Baum Bugle), the postcards were created circa 1908-1912, and I believe the stickpin to be of the same era. The pin does say “Teddy Bear Bread / Trademark Reg. US Patent Office” on the back, so could be the one mentioned in the promotion. However, I’m not completely sure as I have seen another bear stickpin that looks more like Denslow’s art. Either way, a scarce early collectible, with no others available online at time of listing.
