Oz Illustrator W W DENSLOW 1884 Pluto Trade Card Postcard Baker & Hayes

In stock

Here is an unusual early trade card illustrated by Wizard of Oz book illustrator W W Denslow. It pictures a baby Roman god–in this case a black Pluto with a bat (Pluto was the god of the Underworld). The flames behind his head are gilt. Copyright 1884 by Baker and Hayes; a very early example of Denslow’s work with the B&H mark above the bat’s wing. The same cards were used for advertising different businesses–this one for “New Emerald Cook Stoves”. Pluto is one of the hardest ones to find, probably less of them since they’re a little scary looking? This gig by Denslow is mentioned in the corrections/additions to the Greene/Hearn Bibliography on WW Denslow published in the Autumn 1980 Baum Bugle (p 17).

In very good condition with a tiny scuff above the A. No scrapbook residue on the blank back, nice and clean.
Please check out the “Oz Illustrators” section in my store for other unusual Denslow items.
