Description

Here is a wonderful magazine featuring Wizard of Oz illustrator John R. Neill. This glossy magazine has Neill’s “Rabbits Making Cider” on the cover and a huge 23-page illustrated article about Neill and his illustrations, written by Oz scholar Michael Patrick Hearn. Neill illustrated 35 Oz books and also wrote some, yes…he was a prolific artist who illustrated for countless magazines and newspapers enumerated here, but…I learned a lot of new things as well. For example, did you know that Neill used his nieces as stand-ins for Dorothy and Ozma, and he often sketched characters in the nude to get the anatomy correct before filling in the details? Or that he and L. Frank Baum had an on again, off again relationship, with Baum not always approving of his interpretation of his stories? Or that he illustrated not only anonymously, but under several pseudonyms? A classic for Oz fans. A beautifully done tribute to a well-loved man. Issue also contains 2 articles on Harvey T. Dunn and his nude paintings.

Hard to find out of print mag from 2006, in excellent, near fine condition with just a smidge of edge wear.
