Here is a first printing of an Altemus books illustrated by Wizard of Oz illustrator John R. Neill: The Foolish Fox. Many of the illustrations are colored in red, blue and black. This one of Henry Altemus’ Wee Books for Wee Folks series. Small 4 1/4″ by 5 1/2″ format, 96 numbered pages. Copyright and published in 1904, in the first printing format. Half vellus with decorated cover and illustrated endpapers. According to http://henryaltemus.com/wee_books/index.htm,”this format had a run of less than a year and was quickly replaced by the second format.”
Very good condition for one of these little children’s gems: Cover illustration is excellent, a few dents to edges (as if bound with string), spine and rear cover clean with slight cock to book. Illustrated interior endpapers are clean and unmarked, slight cracking to text block at half title page, pages clean and unmarked. Hard to find in this condition in the first printing format.
