Here is a first edition of the Children’s Red Book series, Andersen’s Fairy Tales (The Ugly Duckling), illustrated by Wizard of Oz illustrator John R. Neill. Also contains the story of Rip Van Winkle. According to Oz bibliographer Bill Thompson, these red-cloth covered books with color cover inlay were the first binding format printed of many for these dual-story books named “Children’s Red Books” by Reilly & Britton, circa 1909 (copyright 1908). With lavish color endpapers, a color title page and frontispiece, and color illustrations on many of the 57 numbered pages. This is volume XI of the 12 book series. In the rear, includes Baum titles through John Dough and the Cherub (1906), as well as The Twinkle Tales.
Book is in good plus condition, with some rubbing and a little fraying/cloth loss at base of cover. Spine and rear cover in nice shape. The binding is tight, with a little cracking on rear hinge, gift inscription and 3/8″ tear at edge of title page. Complete but there is finger soiling throughtout. See photos.
