Here is a beautiful set of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and rhough the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll, published by Harper & Brothers (New York) in 1901 and 1902, respectively. This set is notable for each book having 40 inserted full-page B&W illustrations by Peter Newell, executed with style and a touch of absurdity. Not your Disney Alice, this! See the numerous photos–and also notice the fantastical page ornaments in the margins. These page borders are signed Robert Murray Wright.
The books are bound in a vellum-like paper and have different gilt embossed Alice illustrations at lower left. Exterior condition is good only, as both books have had some professional restoration to the fragile spines, which have age toning. Alice has some spine creasing and tiny spots, while the harder to find Looking Glass has been rebacked. Bumping to edges and corners. Interior of both is near very good, with all 40 plates included in each, a few seem to have been re-inserted. Binding on Alice is a little floppy but holding; Looking Glass is tight. Both with pencil name of “Hattie Rachel Sondheim” (born 1893) inside. Pages in nice condition with occasional mark or spot. Photogravure frontispieces of Carroll (in Alice) and Newell (in Looking Glass) in nice condition; Alice with some age toning to title page. All in all a lovely antique set, suitable for a special holiday gift for someone–including yourself!
