Description
Only the second of this amazing postcard I’ve ever seen, as they’re almost impossible to find. This copyright 1907 original postcard features a Wizard of Oz float in the New Orleans Mardi Gras “Rex” parade (the parade itself in 1908 when it seems they had a lot of fantasy floats). The float is apparently designed by Thos. F. Gessner and is an incredible fantasy extravaganza–with Glinda, the Tin Man, a Denslow-esque Wicked Witch, the Scarecrow and some others all grouped around the proudly perched Cowardly Lion, who is wearing green spectacles. They are standing on something that looks like green swiss cheese embellished with spires and red poppies. Really a lovely, incredible piece.
Published by the Adolph Selige Pub. Co, St Louis; part of a set of beautiful float postcards that also includes “Prince Silverwings”.
This original card is in good condition, with some corner wear and a stamp and light postmark on the front. The back is postmarked New Orleans 1908 and is written in French.
