UPDATE: Only “Peculiar Penguins” sheet is still available…
Oz author Ruth Plumly Thompson was very prolific, and also wrote uncredited text for Disney in the 30’s. These efforts included various McKay-published books “from a Walt Disney Silly Symphony” and “by the staff of Walt Disney studios” in 1934 and 1935. The Autumn 1991 Baum Bugle checklist confirms that Thompson wrote the books of Peculiar Penguins, The Tortoise and the Hare and “probably” wrote Elmer Elephant as well.
These stories were also issued as short Silly Symphony films and one-sheet comic poems for Good Housekeeping magazine in the mid 30’s, subtitled “from the Walt Disney Silly Symphony”. The comic sheets were illustrated by Disney artist Tom Wood, but according to a 1936 letter by Roy Disney, “We have one very capable man [Wood] who has been steadily preparing the artwork for the pages, but with respect to the verses, I haven’t been quite so fortunate. Instead I have had to rely on getting it done here and there around the studio…” So it’s unknown if Thompson wrote the poetry for these magazines as well. Price is for ONE of the individual sheets. Size is 8″ x 11 1/2″ and they are in good to very good condition with light wear.
