Description

Your choice of unusual early trade cards illustrated by Wizard of Oz book illustrator W W Denslow as shown in the photos. These are very early and charming examples of Denslow’s work from the 1880s–almost 140 years old! Several cards are from the comic stageplay Falka (different sets/productions), with his “W*D” signature marked lightly in red. This gig by Denslow is mentioned in the Bibliography on W W Denslow published in the Autumn 1992 Baum Bugle; see also the Spring 2015 Bugle. Four cards have SOLD, remaining are Folbach (man pointing up), Edwige (woman in blue), Arthur (with parasol) and Pelican (the monk).

There is also one card–The Beggar Student (SOLD “Jailer–These I’ll now confiscate”) and one from Denslow’s skating series (“In Tow”). Instead of the normal B&H (Baker and Hayes) mark, “In Tow” has an H mark–probably for Hayes alone.

Also available is one rare theatre card from A Bunch of Keys (“You men are such flirts”). The Bunch of Keys card is not signed but is in the style of other known theater trade cards Denslow did in this period such as “Skipped by the Light of the Moon” and “The Beggar Student”. Denslow scholar Michael Patrick Hearn agrees that the Bunch of Keys cards are “probably by Denslow”.

In generally good condition with some wear–see photos. Price is for ONE card, please specify which in the Notes section of your order. For more than one card, please increase the Quantity in your card.

Please check out the “Oz Illustrators” section in my Ebay store for other unusual Denslow items.
