Description
In a Battlefield Dugout. Two annotated photo postcards/photographs of 4 American soldiers at St. Mihiel, France. 1) Four soldiers cooking some sort of meat on a stick: “On a battlefield near St. Mihiel” (front) and “In a dugout” with names on the back. 2) Same 4 soldiers posing reclining: “Around St Mhiel (sic), Photograph by B E Harig”, with names. In fair to good condition; one with corner chip; cardstock glued to back of one is frayed at bottom. A unique portrait of soldier’s everyday lives while awaiting the first US-led attack of WWI.
The Battle of St. Mihiel was the first and only largely US offensive in World War I, which caught the Germans by surprise, with ~27,000 casualties on both sides.
