In 1916, Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum started a new “Bluebird” book series under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne. “Van Dyne” was already popular as author of the Aunt Jane’s Nieces series books. Baum wrote several books in this new series before he died, starting with this book, “Mary Louise” (the name of his favorite sister). But what makes the book offered here so special, of course, is that it comes with the original dust jacket. The second jacket from this series I’ve ever offered in my store! Even better, this is the early jacket design with bluebirds, rather than the later girl reading design implemented circa 1921-1922 (Bienvenue & Schmidt, p. 337).
Copyright 1916, this is a circa 1920 Reilly & Lee printing. The book has a black and white frontispiece and 267 pages. The dust jacket has a synopsis of the story on the front flap, a description of the Mary Louise series on the rear flap, and a description of the Camp Fire Girl Series on the rear cover. The front cover of the jacket has a beautiful bluebird motif.
The book is in very good condition, quite pretty and clean inside and out. Hinges and binding are tight, corner bumping, endpapers have some age toning. The frontispiece is in nice condition.
The dust jacket is good, basically complete with rear flap detached but present, small edge tears and chipping to spine ends, not affecting any of the text. I will put it in a mylar-style jacket for protection. A rare find for Baum fanatics!
