Description

Here is another scarce Oz-related book. This is the 1st edition, 1st printing of Aunt Jane’s Nieces Abroad with the unusual deluxe GREEN cover. Second of the series for girls written by L. Frank Baum under the Edith Van Dyne pseudonym, published in 1906 Reilly & Britton. Oval color illustration on front cover, gilt title and adornment, FIVE B&W plates by E. A. Nelson. Book is about 5 1/2 x 8″. All the later printings have a tan cover, and most have just the frontispiece rather than all five plates.

Condition is near very good; the main flaw being some loss to the pastedown of the 3 nieces on the cover. Gilt and blue cover ornaments are intact. Some wear to spine sides and base; slight cock to book. Inside, front hinge has been neatly repaired, with ~1/2″ of paper missing at base. Pencil name (Esther Donohue) and bookseller’s price in pencil on front endpaper. All 5 B&W plates present and in very good condition, as are the pages (light soiling). Nice copy of a hard to find 1st in any condition. (This was actually my personal copy until I found a nicer one.)
