Here’s a nice early edition of “Grimm’s Animal Stories, Second Series” published by Duffield & Co. Ten stories by Grimm Bros, but the best part is the 4 fabulous medieval style color plates by artist John Rae. Rae also designed the B&W page decorations (marked J R). After seeing these, I think I’ve found a new artist to collect! Rae authored and illustrated a number of Children’s books, including The New Adventures of Alice, Grasshopper Green and the Meadow Mice, and Granny Goose. This second series book is rare and undated, but I found a 1911 newspaper advertisement for it. Appears to be the first and only edition, with no other copies online currently.
Book is in very good condition, with some scuffing to pastedown. Nice spine, binding is tight. Period book inscription on front endpaper, pages with age toning. All four plates (as issued) intact and nice.
